How laughing gas works

Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) is mixed with oxygen and breathed through a small nose mask. Within a few minutes you feel calm, light and relaxed, but you stay awake and can talk to us. When treatment is over, a few minutes of pure oxygen clears it from your body.

Sedation questions

Safety, how it feels, children and recovery.

Is laughing gas safe?

Yes. Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for many decades. It's mixed with plenty of oxygen, you stay awake, and it wears off within minutes of breathing pure oxygen.

Will I be asleep?

No. With laughing gas you're awake, relaxed and able to talk and respond. You just won't feel as anxious.

Can children have laughing gas?

Yes. It's commonly used for anxious children and is given by our pedodontist team at Bubbles Dental.

Can I drive home afterwards?

Most people feel back to normal a few minutes after the gas is turned off. We'll check you're ready before you leave.

Do I need to fast before laughing gas?

A light meal an hour or two before is usually best. We'll give you instructions when you book.

Is sedation suitable for everyone?

Most people can have laughing gas. We check your medical history first, and some conditions and early pregnancy may need a different approach.
