What to expect from scaling and deep cleaning.
No. Scaling removes tartar, not enamel. Teeth can feel slightly loose or sensitive for a few days when heavy tartar that was holding inflamed gums is removed; this settles as the gums heal.
Most people feel only vibration and water spray. If gums are very inflamed we can numb the area, and deep or laser cleaning is done with local anaesthesia when needed.
Basic cleaning takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Deep teeth and gum cleaning can take 45 to 60 minutes and is sometimes split into two visits.
Every six months for most people. Smokers and people with gum disease often need cleaning every three to four months.
If you have little or no staining, choose basic cleaning. Tea and coffee stains need the Grade II offer, tobacco stains need deep cleaning, and bleeding gums or gum pockets are best treated with laser deep cleaning. We confirm the right option at your check-up.
